Unveiling the cover for The Dragon Warrior by Katie Zhao (aka the ‘Try Not to Drool’ challenge)

Just the other day, I hinted at the upcoming cover reveal that would take place on my little blog — definitely a book written by an Asian author, definitely Asian-inspired, and most definitely one of my most highly anticipated debut novels for this year.

In my previous blog post, I did not drop the book’s title (which was unbelievably difficult and painful because I was extremely excited to share the news!) This time, however, I am relieved and ecstatic to finally announce that I am introducing the book cover of Katie Zhao’s incredible MG debut, The Dragon Warrior, to the rest of the world!

Wait, let me savor this moment and say that again:

Truly, the gods have smiled down on me and granted me the greatest honor. I have never done a cover reveal on my blog (partly because I never really saw the point in doing one, oops), but in this case, it brings me great joy to know that by the end of this post, I’ll have all of you sobbing. Our mortal hearts* did not deserve this blessing.

* Before we proceed, here’s a soft and gentle reminder that sobbing uncontrollably, continuous drooling, and screaming silently into the virtual void are all totally normal, if not encouraged, reactions. Just make sure to hydrate after reading this post!

The Dragon Warrior by Katie Zhao

Inspired by Chinese mythology, this high-action middle-grade fantasy follows an outcast as she embarks on a quest to prove herself–perfect for fans of Aru Shah and the End of Time and The Serpentโ€™s Secret.

As a member of the Jade Society, twelve-year-old Faryn Liu dreams of honoring her family and the gods by becoming a warrior. But the Society has shunned Faryn and her brother Alex ever since their father disappeared years ago, forcing them to train in secret.

Then, during an errand into San Francisco, Faryn stumbles into a battle with a demon–and helps defeat it. She just might be the fabled Heaven Breaker, a powerful warrior meant to work for the all-mighty deity, the Jade Emperor, by commanding an army of dragons to defeat the demons. That is, if she can prove her worth and find the island of the immortals before the Lunar New Year.

With Alex and other unlikely allies at her side, Faryn sets off on a daring quest across Chinatowns. But becoming the Heaven Breaker will require more sacrifices than she first realized . . . What will Faryn be willing to give up to claim her destiny?

This richly woven contemporary middle-grade fantasy, full of humor, magic, and heart, will appeal to readers who love Roshani Chokshi and Sayantani DasGupta.

Okay, have you recovered? How is your heart doing? Which punched your heart first — the stunning cover or the breathtakingly beautiful blurb? Yeah, okay, go and grab yourself a glass of water — and then we’ll talk. I’ll wait.

All freaking out aside*, The Dragon Warrior is set to officially hit the shelves on October 15th. Yes, you read that right: we finally have an official release date for this Chinese-inspired beauty! Y’all better mark your calendars and start counting down.

* Who am I even kidding at this point?

Here’s even better news for all of us:

This is not a drill, friends! You can pre-order your own copy of Katie’s spectacular debut through Amazon, Book Depository, and IndieBound — if you need any extra incentive, these are affiliate links which means that by pre-ordering, you are supporting both Katie and me. It’s a win-win for us all!

I loved the cover of The Dragon Warrior so much that it actually inspired me to come up with an aesthetic! Is it too obvious that I am really loving the red, gold, and blue hues? The book cover looks incredibly regal and stunning — and I am absolutely here for it.

By the way, you can download this aesthetic in wallpaper form for your laptop or computer — and best of all, the wallpaper features (gasp!) an actual quote from The Dragon Warrior. Download the wallpaper here.

    1. Aaaaah thank you, Julianna! I hardly ever make aesthetics because I think I’m pretty bad at it, but I’m actually very happy with this one. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ’•

But of course, the cover is a whole lot more gorgeous!
