Shut up, Shealea

Spotlight: Helen Scheuerer on her finishing her debut trilogy, The Oremere Chronicles

Hello, Helen! Welcome aboard the third (and final!) blog tour for The Oremere Chronicles! Thank you very much for entrusting me once again with the huge honor and privilege of spearheading this tour — it truly means the whole world to me. And of course, I cannot thank you enough as well for taking the time to (virtually) sit down with us and to talk about the final installment of your debut fantasy series, wherein the third book is entitled War of Mist.

To kick off this interview, I thought it might be fun and interesting to prepare a couple of light, silly questions for you to answer.

What food and/or beverage would you pair off with each book of The Oremere Chronicles, and why do you think these would complement or go well with the books? (To clarify, you’re assigning particular food/beverage to Heart of Mist, Reign of Mist, and War of Mist.)

Heart of Mist: Anything you can cook over a campfire OR a lot of bread and cheese (which is what they mainly eat in the book when they’re on the road).

Reign of Mist: Hot chocolate or spiced mulled wine to keep us warm in Wildenhaven!

War of Mist: A big formal feast (read: Sunday roast)

If you could live the rest of your life in any of the kingdoms, where would you want to live in and why?

That’s a really hard one, Shealea! While I love writing about Havennesse (the winter continent), I don’t think I could handle that type of cold permanently.

Perhaps the place that’s described at the end of Book 3? I can’t say more without risking spoilers!

Thank you for playing along, Helen! As always, you are amazing. For the next portion of this interview, let’s discuss War of Mist, the writing process behind it, and the feelings that arise from finishing your first series (huge, huge congratulations, by the way!).

I’ve been following this trilogy ever since you reached out to me via email and introduced me to your debut YA fantasy novel, Heart of Mist. That was a couple of years ago, and since 2017, I’ve grown very attached to the complex characters, the endlessly fascinating world, and the story itself. I can only imagine that this feeling of attachment is greatly intensified for authors — the books being a product of years’ worth of hard work and all, so the first thing I’d like to ask you is: How are you feeling now that The Oremere Chronicles is coming to its end with the release of War of Mist?

It depends what day you ask me really! This series is indeed a product of years and years of work, so on one hand, it’s incredibly rewarding to see it complete after all this time. On the other, it’s sad to say goodbye to my characters.

I’ve written these books all over the world, but it’s a surreal experience living abroad during the lead-up to the release. I feel a little removed from it all, to be honest.

I’ve also started brainstorming ideas for new projects, which is an odd feeling in itself when War of Mist hasn’t officially hit the shelves yet.

At its heart, what is War of Mist about? And what makes it significantly different from its two predecessors, namely, Heart of Mist and Reign of Mist?

That’s a great question. I’d say that War of Mist is about friendship, loyalty and facing your fears.

In the previous two books, the characters were often scattered across the realm trying to fight their own personal demons. What’s different about this book is that it unites all our favourite characters and forces them to take a final stand together.

With the first two books out in the world for readers to consume, there is certainly a lot of expectations placed on the final installment of your series. What were the biggest challenges in writing the last book?

You’re absolutely right about that! Though I’ll be the first to admit that a lot of the pressure I feel is actually self-inflicted!

One of the biggest challenges was choosing where to end the story. It’s tricky finding the balance between creating a satisfying ending without tying everything up too neatly.

My beta readers and I discussed the ending at length and it definitely took a number of rewrites to end where it does now.

In contrast to the previous question, what were the most rewarding aspects of writing War of Mist?

Experiencing those moments where aspects of the story just click into place. I found there were several ‘bread crumbs’ I’d layered into the previous books without really knowing why… Then I’d have a ‘light bulb’ moment where the answer came to me and things fell into place in the third book. That was incredibly rewarding!

It’s also been amazing seeing how excited people are for the final book. It’s a pretty big accomplishment to sustain the same readership over 3 years, so I’m very proud of that.

With the story finished and the books completed, have you finally settled on which among your wonderfully diverse cast of characters is your favorite?

Ahhh that’s like asking a mother to pick her favourite child! But I’ll play… 🙂

I have a big soft spot for Fi and Swinton. I love writing their scenes together and always find that I enjoy myself when I’m creating their banter.

I also loved writing Eydis, who’s such a force to be reckoned with

The books do get a bit dark, especially War of Mist, and so I think I really appreciated characters who had a bit of light to them: Sahara, Luka, Dash, Tailor and Fi…

To end this interview, my final question is: What do you plan to do after War of Mist is released into the world? Do you have your eyes set on new writing projects, or are you already working on something?

One of the hardest things about being an author is the amount of secret-keeping you have to do! I’m trying my best to keep my lips sealed right now about what I’m working on, but I’ll say this…

There’ll be at least one new Scheuerer title per year for the next few years 😉

My publishing imprint Talem Press has also welcomed another author, Bronwyn Eley into its fold. Bronwyn’s debut, RELIC will be published on September 12th this year, so keep an eye out for that 🙂

And those are all the questions that I have for you today. If I’m not mistaken, this is my third time interviewing you on my blog, and as always, it’s been a delightful pleasure to have you here, Helen! Again, thank you very much for your time, and congratulations on War of Mist! I can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on this exciting installment.

As always, thank you so much for having me, Shealea. It’s such a thrill working with you.
